SummaryInterview by Jennifer Nosworthy in 1989 Selma Hare & Maisie Sharp about retailing at Scott's Department Store from a woman’s perspective.
Selma started working at Scott's in 1938 until 1959, trained by Izzie McDougall in the RIDSAC formula, that stood for "reception, inquiry, display, selection, addition and commendation".
She talks about the working there during WWII, the many blackouts, Air Raid Drills and recalls serving customers with the aid of light from hurricane lamps. Selma advises that many of the girls at Scotts during this time had the good fortune of having been trained in First Aid by "one of Newcastle's most wonderful people, Paddy Pender".
Scott's used to hold concerts for the serviceman at the City Hall, they had comedy teams, ballet and a choir. She talks about meeting Mr Scott, he would remind us from time to time "to treat, regard our customers as friends and always to treat them as our guests."
