SummaryInterview by Jodie Calvert in 1988 with Kathleen Blackett about women in Newcastle Industries during WWII.
Kathleen left school at 16 and began work at "Elliotts" tailoring, shortly afterwards she married and when her husband went off to war she registered to the "Manpower" to do work. She was appointed to Rylands and speaks about the resentment towards women for participating in manual work "We couldn't lift heavy loads therefore we only got 75% of the men's wage".
Kathleen describes the work conditions, and the active part that unions played on behalf of women to get fair conditions for them. She describes how after the war ended there was a decline of jobs available to women in industry.
