Ada grew up in Hamilton and moved to Charlestown when she married in 1936, she describes how her and her husband approached the 'Newcastle Building Society' for finance to build their first home during the Depression years. Ada talks about the Depression, the hardship of many families and the camps at Newcastle's 'Horseshoe Beach', 'Hollywood' at Jesmond.
Charlestown was once known as "Raspberry Gully", and in 1873 the Waratah Coal Company began operations in the gully. The mining village had three hotels and four shops, later founders of retail in Charlestown were the Pickering family. Ada's husband's grandparents were Edward and Elizabeth Pickering and among the first residents of the newly established village. The Pickerings opened a shop on the front verandah of their Dickenson Street home and serviced the mining community.
