SummaryInterview by Chris Durie in 1989 with Wal Partridge about coal mining in Newcastle in the 1950s.
Wal was born in 1934 and worked in the mines in the early 1950s, he recalls his days as a 'wheelman' in Stockton Borehole and John Darling pits in those years, and contrasts his employment at age 16 at Stockton Borehole Colliery with the different conditions at John Darling some 6- 10 months later.
Recounting his days at the mines, Wal describes the conditions, the organisation of the miners and support staff, as well as his role at the mine. He describes the role of the 'powder monkeys', the use of pit ponies and hand mining in shallow seams, a technique that was taken over by modern technology.
