SummaryInterview by Karen Hicks in 1989 with Joan Hicks about Belmont South in Lake Macquarie.
Joan has lived there since 1945, she would walk along the 'old army road' from Belmont to Marks Point, only a few houses and small businesses were present along the foreshore. She recalls in the 1940s the "snow droppers" or local gypsies who were at Cane Point caravan Park, and also the Thompson family bakery that used wood burning ovens and had an aeroplane propeller to cool down the bread.
The tourist industry at Belmont is described, as well as the numerous motels and hotels. Joan also describes the Aboriginal Dreamtime story of the local lagoon, and the origins of Marks Point and some of the early European pioneers of the area.
