SummaryInterview by Suzanne Heffernan in 1989 with Helen Taylor about Tanilba House at Port Stephens.
Helen was born in Czechoslovakia and came to Australia in 1949 at the age of 13. Her family leased Tanilba House in the 1950s and when a demolition order was placed on the house in 1968 the family bought it.
The original Tanilba House was built by Lieutenant William Caswell in 1831, the second house was a basic cottage and the one that stands today was built around the 1830s.
There was a vineyard on the property and Caswell brought workers from Germany, they also worked a vineyard at "Balickerra" near Seaham. Helen discusses the history of the house, the many features and some of the heritage issues.
