The D57 Class 4-8-2 was the first mountain class on the NSW railway in 1929. These locomotives were the first to have three simple sylinders, a single-piece cast-steel frame, a cast-steel frame for the trailing truck, power reverse gear and mechanical stoker. Used on the Mountains, South and illawarra lines, 25 locomotives were supplied by Clyde Engineering, and the tenders built at Mort's Dock.
