The location is actually Devonport, the rails seen in bottom left of shot being the Western line, with the DS loco being on one of the short headshunts off the Devonport turntable. TGR DS Class, no. 7, ex-NZR WF Class, after withdrawal from service, [Devonport, Tasmania, post-1958]

Description

This locomotive was withdrawn from service in 1958. As at least one of the coupling bars is disconnected, it is clear the locomotive was not operational when photographed.

When in TGR service the class were used for shunting and short haul around Hobart, making Hobart the most likey location for this scene.

This image was scanned from an original glass plate or negative, kindly provided by the Australian Railway Historical Society, New South Wales Division.
