Description
InformationThe VR number on the front buffer beam is obscured, but it is known that the numbers for this class were from 353 to 381, and were odd numbers only. It is likely that the engine number is 373. The Phoenix Foundry builder's plate appears to carry the number 135, or possibly 185. This class were built in 1886-87, but the example in this image appears to have been fitted with some experimental ducting. At the moment no information is available on when this was fitted. The running lights do not appear to be of the type used in the 1880-1890 period, but they do match the type shown in another VR image from c. 1915: Item MM 4754 Negative - Bruthen District, Victoria. All of this class had been scrapped by 1920. Note: This class should not be confused with the VR "2nd" X class, which was a 2-8-2 dating from 1929.

Victorian Railways X class 0-6-0 'Jumbo', No.353 (Phoenix Foundry, Ballarat, 18860, shown outside the 'National Workshops' at Newport experimentally fitted with 'Alve's hot air apparatus' in 1893. The device was fitted around the chimney and hot air was ducted to the ashpan to pre-heat the primary air supply to the firebox as an aid to combustion.
