The locomotive is carrying the letter "L" on the front buffer beam, indicating the date is after the 1890 reclassification, and before the 1924 reclassification to Z22 class.
There were ten locomotives in this class, and they are an unusual mixture of English detailing on top of an American design. They were built for passenger traffic, and had 18" x 26" cylinders and 60.5" driving wheels. The last of the class was in service until 1937.
