NSWGR J522 class (later Z28), class prototype, nicknamed "Native Bears", unidentified location, probably 1890's
This is a rare image of a rare class of locomotive. There were only four of them, built in 1893 by the NSWGR's Eveleigh Railway Workshops. Based on a Baldwin design, but with some local touches. From 1924 onwards this locomotive would have been numbered (Z)2801, so the image is pre-1924. It is likely to date from the early 1890's, when the locomotive was still quite new.
