The first executive officers were Mr. James Fletcher,]nr., (president), Mr. G. Youll (vicetpresident) and Mr. W. Batty- (hon. secretary). From that year up to the present time, Walls! end[...]time to time been successful in all comv petitions. The last outstanding team to win the State Championship was the 1933 combination, which was as follows—A. Holt, J. P‘arkes, J. Whitelaw, W. Forrester, C. Edgetton, J. Osborne, H. Pringle, ]. O’Brien, A. Quill, Hugh Whitelaw and V. Barnett. This team also won other valuable trophies during its associa tion with the club. Junior players have always been ranked of the hi[...]the club with a special cup for these performances. The club’s greatest asset is the fine playing[...]e appointments, known as the Crystal Palace Ground. Locally known in the early days as ”Johnson's Paddock," this valuable site was formerly a swamp area. Converted to a playing area by the club and held[...]wcastle Wallsend Coal Company, in the first stage. this ground was purchased by the Wallsend Soccer Football Club in 1929 at a cost of £750. Voluntary work by the members of the organisatio[...]e buildings on the ground and also the outer fence. Nevertheless, viewed from the hills, on the road[...]inter time, Wallsend presents an interesting study. In the right background the varivcoloured cultiv[...]s at Marylands make an enti‘hnding sightti Ahead. the town proper, nestling in the valley and climb[...]farms and poultry 7Farms, add variety to the view. One by one the chimneys of the various homes cont[...]a haze which softens the features of the landscape. The setting sun illuminates the surrounding hills[...]d tranquility that it would be diflicult to equal. But from Wallsend all the famous beauty spots of the district are within easy reach. A thirty minute tram journey gives access to the glorious beaches at Nobby‘s and Newcastle. From there a few minutes by ferry across Newcastl[...]s one to Stockton beach, the “Manly of the North.” Here also, is a stretch. of sand extending unbroken, for over nine'miles. By joining a ‘bus at Hamilton, or as an altern[...]er the safest possible conditions at the Bar Beach. A little further on, Merewether beach amply repays one for the time spent in travelling. ,. Six miles south of Wallsend lies Spe‘er's Poin[...]point which is quickly and cheaply reached by ~bus. The West Wallsend ”bus service gives access to[...]eaches of Cockle Creek, an ideal spot for swimming. Also. on the same route, are wonderful bathing and picnicing grounds known as “Salty Creek" and “Scotchy.” These two have excellent dressing accommodatio[...]st distant is less than five miles from Wiallsend. ‘ West Wallsend, a journey of seven miles, is the starting point for a three mile hike up Mount Sugarloaf. Once the summit is reached, one can readily understand why this-climb is undertaken by so many. Spread below is a panorama of the Newcastle District, with the Pacific Ocean forming a colourful background. To the north, Port Stephens can be discerned and to the ~West the vast Maitland Coalfields are spread out. To the south, Lake Macquarie unfolds in all its grandeur. As constituted at present, Wallsend Municipal Band was formed on Nov-ember 7th, 1929. The first oflicials being: President, Mr. H. Richardson; Secretary, Mr. H. Rundle; Treasurer, Mr. W. Stevens; Bandmaster, Mr. _J. Muir. The primary object being to assist charitable organisations. This work has been carried out faithfully to the present day. On 13th November, 1930, a public meeting was convened by the Mayor of that period, Alderman O. J. Jones, for the purpose of forming a Citizens” C[...]o assist in the raising of finance for its upkeep. Officials elected were: President, Ald. O. J. Jones; Secretary, Mr. W. E. Woodhouse; Treasurer, Mr. E. Gardener; Bandv master, Mr. H. R. Johnson. In July, 1931, the Wallsend Minersa Lodge was ap[...]granted a levy of threepence per member per month. From this date with a steady and assured regular income, the remarkable progress of the band can be traced. The constant advocating of Mr. W. Hughes was rewarded when, on 7th October, 1931, t[...]ith the object of equipping the band with uniforms. On let July, 1932, the tender of West Wallsend Co[...]the supply of 27 uniforms at a cost of £122/15/r. The support of the Wallsend Miners‘ Lodge with[...]nthly contribution made this expew diture possible. The activities of the band in charitable work ma[...]rom the fact that during the recent Hospital Drive. the band turned out on 43 occasions in all parts of the District. and directly raised £39/10/, by its first Band Contest for the appeal. Fryar, who is one of the oldest residents of the Town, having lived in the locality for over seventy years. Wallsend came into existence in 1859 when the Ra[...]the site of the proposed Colliery was being built. The workmen engaged on the construction of this l[...]re met by the first hotel to be built in the Town. This was situated near where the Co, operative Colliery’s Coal Line now crosses Sandgate Road. In the year 1859, Mr. Ramsay and party commenced sinking a shaft for Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company’s "A” Pit. It took two days to bring the necessary tools out[...]k, and a way had to be hewn through the dense bush. The first religious service had to be preached f[...]rsection of Thomas Street and Lake Road by the Rev. William Hill, of the Primitive Methodist Church. The first place of worship was an old slab hut w[...]by the Wesleyan Method' ists from 1859‘ to 1366. In 1861 passengers were allowed to travel from Newcastle to Wallsend in the guards van of the coal trains. This journey was on sufferance only, and at the traveller’s own risk. In 1862 a much needed reform in this system took place, and tickets for the journey could be purchased. These were issued by a boy in the office at the[...]the state of the roads made travel painfully slow. This matter was rectified when a site for a cemetery was acquired in 1864. In 1867 agitation was commenced for a school bui[...]rning the “three R‘s" was becoming overcrowded. In those days much bitterness existed between the[...]tter as education the two factions could not agree. After much negotiating the representatives of the two townships agreed to differ (to quote the words of Mr. Fryar) and separate sites were selected for two schools. The Wallsend School was built in February, 1870,[...]h cost had to be borne by the citizens of the town. (Now who growls at having to buy a‘few text books?) Our contributor, Mr. T. Fryar claims the dis' tinction of being the first pupil to enter the new building. This was a gesture of appreciation of the sterling efforts of Mr. T. ![]() | and in 1874 Wallsend was incorporated as a Municipality. The municipal elections created greater excitemen[...]endeavoured to achieve this in no uncertain manner. In the same year the first Bank commenced operations in Kemp Street. The municipal elections in 1875 certainly stirred[...]had a Supreme Court Writ issued‘ to oust Messrs. Ross and Fryar. The verdict was given in favour of the plaintiffs and the election was completely upset. Per culiarly enough, at the re'election, these two gained the seats and held them. On December 27th, 1876. the town was diveded into two separate town ships[...]railway line, and Plattsburg on the northern side. The School of Arts building in Metcalfe Street. the site of which was acquired in 1872, was sold to the Wallsend Council in 1879. The School of Arts then erected another building[...]Wallsend Council, and so history re peated itself. In 1879 an explosion occurred in the Wallsend Colliery. and Mr. G. Oughton lost his life, and three others were injured. At this time over 900 men were employed in the m[...]h as 300,000 tons of coal was produced in one year. ‘ The population of the two municipalities was[...]dical men to take up practice in Wallsend were Drs. J. and R. Pearson, who came to the town in the early '80's.D Nash wa , lc'l'ed in a fall from a horse whilst[...]t Wallsend Racecourse on November 20th,1885’ Mr. J. Fletcher, the first Mayor of Wallsend, died in M[...]d in the Wallsend Cemetery on the 22nd March, 1891. It was estimated that 30,000 people attended the funeral. In addition to Coal Mining, Wallsend had, at various times, other industries operating within its boundaries. These wer ' two' SaWrmillsand two Coke Com' panies. A Gas Company also operated for some years as a Cooperative concern, and is now the property of Messrs. Lyons Bros, and still in action. In 1915 the Municipality was reconstituted as Wallsend with one council. This body still operates with fifteen Alderr men[...]he largest Municipal Council in the Commonr wealth. Mining strikes at various times throughout the l[...]on the whole, the town has prospered up till 1929. Then, the economic depression and other factors b[...]nd numerous small ones operating on a share system. Wallsend is very fortunate in this respect; its[...]ng met by electric trams, motor bus and charabancs. Goods are conveyed from all centres by train over[...]ailway line and from Newcastle by various carriers. Dealing first with the tramway system, a frequent service is provided. Trams depart from Newcastle each quarter’hour, on the hour and each quarter for the city of Newcastle. The journey of 30 minutes for a fare of fourpence is, incidentally the cheapest tram journey in the world. HEADQUARTERS, WALLSEND PARK OVAL HIS ground was[...]er to the Wallsend Council and dedicated as a Park. Many notable cricketers have played with the Club and have long since passed away. Success on the field in competitions in which the Club has participated have been varied. In the season 1911.12 the Third Grade team was de' feated in the final by the Sacred Heart Club. In 1922 the Second Grade team won the Premiership, and were beaten in the final of the competition. An amalga' mation of the Wallsend and Maryland Clubs (second grade) .was brought about in 1924 25', and this combinatio[...]sful in winning both Premiership and Final honours. In the same year the Club also won the Premiership and Final in the Fourth Grade. The following year they applied for and were granted a district by the Association. Although the Club did not win any honours as a district it was frequently congratulated by opponents. Many players from places within the district have[...]ng a district, and have rendered valuable services. The Wallsend Council was prevailed upon to lay down a turf wicket in the Wallsend Park. This work was carried out by Mr. B. Corke, in conjunction with the Council‘s Engineer,‘ Mr. W. Cunningham. The Club was congratulated upon the playing qualities of the wicket by the late Dr. E. P. Barbour and many others who have played upon it. The Council: gave every assistance to the Club to maintain the standard of the ground and the wicket. In 1933 the Club launched out in its biggest venture, viz., the engaging of a playing coach for the benefit of the many promising young players available. Those concerned we e heartily congratulated on the success of the venture. The services of Mr. E. Dinan were engaged, and the Club rose from the lo[...]Premiership and Final of the District Competition. In 1934,35 a coach was also engaged. First Mr. E. Dinan. and later Mr. J. Fisher formerly of the Gordon Club. Whilst the Club did not win, it gave a fine pe e[...]s behind the three leading teams (who dead heated). Sight Boards were erected on the Clubs ground and are claimed to be the best in the district. This was achieved mainly through the good work of the Club 5 secretary, Mr G A. The plant which produced the paper was first hou[...]ant, bakers, and opposite the old council chambers. Later the residence of the “Sun“ was transferred to Mr. Tom Abel’s building in Nelson Street, Plattsburg, which building was later acquired by the W. E? P. Corop. Society. Another removal found the “Sun“ housed in Mr. Wicken’s building on the other side of the street and adjacent to the concrete drain. The “Sun" was an excellent sheet and was regarded as one of the best printed provincial papers in' N.S. Wales. It was run on uprtOvdate lines and for some time was a birweekly, but later became a weekly production. A casual glance through the files of the paper r[...]tant thought, wrote in the interests of the miners. Peter Bowling in after years became a leader of the miners and a beacon light in the Miners’ Federation. The town bard was Thomas Lumsden, a honoured onerlegged resident who recorded doings in his burg in verse. The “Sun" plant was, in 1895, taken to Newcastle and was used for the publication of "The Evening Times.” Mr. K. T. Pogonoski, the editor'proprietor of‘the “Sun" laid down his pen in 1920. Two of his sons, reared in Walls send, keep his n[...]printing and newspaper business before the public. Mr. Reg. C. Pogonoski is managing director of the Newcastle firm of Reg. C. Motor cyclists of the district are grateful to the Wallsend Council for providing such facilities. Kynaston, the club‘s organiser, was responr sib[...]cle contest of its kind held in the Common, wealth. An entry of sixty riders for the event established a record for this class of contest in the district. The Executive Council has compiled an ambitious programme for the coming season. This includes Scrambles, Hill Climbs, Grass Track Races, Trials. Carnivals. The policy of the company was to present the com[...]ling to undertake the organisation of the function. Up to November, 1934. the company had raised over £1000 for those in distress, and had travelled 1535' miles in doing so. No payments whatever were made to members, but ev[...]cket expense was met from the funds of the company.
