Maryland Station Meteorological Observations

Weather records from Maryland Station on the New South Wales – Queensland border (near “The Summit”) were located by Mr. William Oates, Archivist at the University of New England in 2016.

The Maryland Station was the third of the major runs acquired by Matthew Henry Marsh in the 1840’s. This run later became part of the New South Wales – Queensland  border near Stanthorpe. These runs also included Salisbury Court and Booralong and ran to about 250,000 acres.

Maryland Station (postal code 4437), located on the Queensland-NSW border, just off the New England Highway. The station is part of the Maryland Historical District, and has been in existence since the 1860s. The Station records daily rainfall (BOM 56207) as part of the Bureau of Meteorology records (since 1868) but no other meteorological information is included on the BOM web site.

During a visit in May 2021, Professor Howard Bridgman met the third-generation owner, Graham Greenup, who showed him 8 small books which contained weather records for 1896 to 1903. He allowed us to borrow these and take them back to the University of Newcastle for digitisation, thus providing an additional 6 years of weather records (1898 to 1903) to add to what we now have on file.
