Programme Booklet Yallarwah Place 1797-1997 containing the stories, background, schedule of events and rituals that took place on the day of the opening of Yallarwah Place, 19 February 1999. 

Yallarwah (meaning 'resting place') is an accommodation centre for the families of Aboriginal patients in John Hunter Hospital. It is believed to be the first such facility in Australia. Funds to build Yallarwah Place were gathered by the Novocastrian Tales project.

The accommodation centre serves the Aboriginal communities of the Hunter and Northern NSW. It will also serve non-indigenous families when the need arises.

The facility is shaped in the form of an Eagle-Hawk astride a flying
boomerang and features other Aboriginal design elements. Aboriginal representatives liaised with architect, Peter McMullen, during the design phase.

The building can accommodate a maximum of twenty people comfortably. It is being dedicated as a Bicentenary Memorial for the people of the Hunter Region.

The memorial draws its inspiration from the relationship between the famed Awabakal man, Biraban, (meaning Eagle-Hawk), and the Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, missionary to the Aborigines at Ebenezer Mission, Lake Macquarie.

If it were not for this historic relationship, it is possible that the Awabakal language may have been lost in the mists of time. Biraban was known by the English as M'Gill. It is also interesting to note that the Eagle-Hawk was sacred to the Awabakal.

The memorial's unique bronze plaques and bronze book were created by Vlase Nikoleski, Head of the School of Fine Art at the University of Newcastle. The plaques, the book and the images of the Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld and Biraban are the University's gift to Yallarwah Place.
