The screw steamer SS Afghan sank at the Dyke in Newcastle Harbour on 2 July 1889. Later investigation suggested that one of the valves was left open and water entered the engine room flooding the vessel. In spite of the engineer’s efforts to stuff blankets down the discharge pipes, the vessel sank. The steamer was refloated.
