DescriptionThis photo appeared in the University News, Volume 11, Number 10, July 8 to 22, 1985. The text was: " All the fun of the Book Fair The second Newcastle University Book Fair opens on July 27. It will be a giant supermarket of second-hand books, some 20,000 volumes in all. The majority of the stock will be offered for sale at bargain prices. On the bottom line will be paperbacks selling for 10 cent each. After raising 23,000 for new student housing from the first Book fair in 1983, the Friends of the University had a short break from collecting books and began work again about 18 months ago. Volunteers from the Friends are busy sorting and pricing the donations. They are processing them at a Merewether School and storing them in accommodation provided by the BHP Company Ltd. Mrs Thelma Wright, chief collector of donations, is constantly making trips to the workroom and the store. The books are sorted into various categories, including novels, children's books, text books, Australiana, religion, art, cooking, photography, travel, hobbies, gardening, sport and music. The text books are of all kinds. They are being subdivided into different sections: Geography, History, Psychology, Sociology, Law, Economics, Foreign Language, Science, Engineering, Medicine, etc. Forming a special corner will be a display of "The Unusual and Interesting."Ã‚Â One of thee glamour stocks, apparently coveted by collectors, is the Royalty section, embracing books about the Queen and members of her family. Sex books also form a sizable section of the Fair. It will also be a good opportunity to buy magazines, sheet music, recordings and cassettes. Old items include a stack of photography magazines an 78 rpm recordings of early Melbourne cups. Antique items will be put up for slow auction. These include Ludwig Leichhardt's Journal of An Overland Expedition in Australia from Moreton bay to port Essington (1844-1845), from London in 1847, which is expected to bring around $900, and Sir John Forrest's Explorations in Australia; 1 Explorations in Search of Dr. Leichhardt. 11 From Perth the Adelaide around the Great Australian Bight. 111 From Champion Bay across the desert to the Telegraph and to Adelaide, from London in 1875, which has a reserve of $750. Thackeray's Works, comprising 12 volumes, rub shoulders with Hutchinson's Pictorial History of the War, an incomplete set of 17 volumes, and J. Needham's Science and Civilisation in China. Offers for the rare items will be received during the Book Fair. Interested Buyers will be able to place their bids in a register and the top offers will be considered on the last day of the Fair. The Fair opens at 1o am on Saturday, July 27, and runs until 5 pm August 3. the hours of selling are10 am until 5 pm on weekends, 10 am until 7 pm on July 29, and 10 am until 4 pm on weekdays. Once again the Hunter Valley Branch of the Australian Federation of University Women will be supplement the Book Fair's profits by selling refreshments in the Great Hall on July 27 and 28 between 10 am and 4 pm. People who still have unwanted books, magazines, sheet music, recordings and cassettes at home are invited to telephone 612059 or 685328 to arrange for them to be collected."
