Edward [Ted] Flowers became a staff member at the Newcastle Technical College Library in 1948, where he met his wife Pat. He worked as a shire librarian for both Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Libraries before returning in 1961 to the Newcastle University College as Head Librarian.
Ted continued in this role as the University became autonomous in 1965, making Ted the first University Librarian. He remained in the position until 1988, seeing the library through many milestones including the acquisition of the Library’s 500,000th book.
"I do believe, that this University is the best thing that has ever happened to this region."
