SummaryInterview by Maureen Tobin in 1988 with Melissa Cameron former employee of the Newcastle Co-Operative Society Store talks about her work with the Australian Women's Army Service (1921-1988). Melissa was born in Western Australia and came to Newcastle in 1923, she was educated at Newcastle Central School matriculating in 1936 and went to work at the Newcastle Co-Operative Society Store as a typist. In 1941she enlisted in the Australian Women's Land Army (AWAS). In Newcastle AWAS women manned searchlights, particularly protecting Newcastle, Stockton, BHP, Mayfield and Merewether were high priority areas, she describes the routine of the women in the service, and other tasks they performed. She believed that WWII taught her discipline and common sense and "really hopes that people are educated to realise peace is precious".
