He was the grandson of George Brown, early coroner of Cessnock.

Henry Moses was Garney’s dad. His father was a teacher.
Harry Brown was his father’s uncle.
Garney was 82 – born 1901.
His father taught him because Garney went to all his schools.
His father taught at Allandale Rd. Left there in 1905 and went to Williamtown.
They lived in the school house next to the school and the Presbytery with Fr. McAuliffe.

The slab church – Slades may have had it as a hay shed. Garney was 5 when he left Cessnock and couldn’t remember it.

Garney married the girl across the road. She was from Oakhampton. Her sister was a Burke (married Tommy Burke).

The Burkes had a fruit vineyard. A few acres. One of his wife’s brothers was an engineer at the Cessnock Butter Factory.

Brother George from Mt View married Marj Coleman.
Euphie – married Harry Maddocks with 6 sons.
Garney – married ---Burke.

Father’s family – John Brown married Selina (no surname) lived on the Mt View Road.
They had one son and three daughters.
Roley Brown – grandfather’s brother’s boy. Bart Brown.

Old Granny – Garney’s grandfather's mother used to sit on the bullock wagon bringing the wine to the wine shop at Laguna.
She had her first ride in the car at her 90th birthday celebration and her second trip in a car was in the hearse.
She took the wine back on the bullock wagon.

He had a pub – he owned the land around it on both sides. The wine sellers, timber yard, possibly the land on the Butter factory and several other properties, Sternbecks.
Waddy Power was his boss.

He was the only one in the family game enough to ask his grandfather for money, and the only one who got it. He wanted to get money to get married. He asked for 100 pounds. He asked another fellow to have Garney meet him at the bank the next day and he lent him the money for 12 months paid back monthly at six and half percent.

Garney's father played the violin in the Cessnock orchestra.

They look at old newspaper clippings and George Brown’s obituary from May 9th 1928. Jack reads it aloud. Mr. Brown died after being struck by a motorcar. Attended by Doctors Bloomfield and MacArthur. [See TRAGIC END (1928, May 9). The Maitland Daily Mercury (NSW : 1894 - 1939), p. 4.]
His Grandfather’s sawmill was leased by Turner’s
George Brown also owned a vineyard and blacksmith shop.
16 May 1877 George Brown purchases Cessnock Hotel from John Daly.
He introduced steam saw milling and had a coal bore, sold a bit to the Caledonian company.
Old McGrane, John Doyle and George Brown were some of the earliest settlers in Cessnock.
Joe Doyle drove the first horse ambulance in Cessnock.
