SummaryJim Carroll's family owned the first hotel in Cessnock. Jack interviews Jim on his childhood in Cessnock and the many jobs he has had, including picking grapes for Lindeman's, butcher, iron foundry worker and delivery driver. Jim was born 1897.

His father was Pat Carroll who was a descendant of Michael Carroll.
Pat was the first licensee of the Cessnock Hotel. He was there from 1856 till 1860 when John Picton took over.

Jack Delaney knew Jim Carroll when he was a boy.
Jim’s dad worked at Old Neath as a hostler doing the afternoon shift. They used to keep the horses down the pit till the weekend.
Jim went to school at the old stone church till a hall from Abermain was brought up in 1906/7. Four nuns were teaching at the time.
1914 - Jim’s first job when he was 17 years old was at Lane and Quinn. Paddy Ryan was the manager. Jim drove the cart till 6pm. Deliveries were made from Neath to Pokolbin.
There were three brothers in the Quinn family and they were all drivers. They were Joe, Tom and Matt.
For about 18 months he worked at a foundry at Rhodes making water pipes for the roads.
Then he came back to work at Healey’s Cordial Factory which was a slab building.
Jack Whalan was the manager.

His next job was at The Store Butchery. Jack Dance and Elphick were store managers. Bill Edwards lived at the slaughterhouse.
Jim got the sack because he was away for two weeks with the mumps.

Following that he tried working on the cotton fields at Cobar, then he picked grapes for Lindemans for 1/2d. a bucket.
The Carrolls grew grapes near Lavender Creek in the first years of the 20th Century.

Capper Gehrig sold wine from a cellar. Grapes were stamped by feet. Capper and Jim’s dad, Pat worked together with the wine and also road building. Jim used to drive the cart carrying the road metal rocks. The road foundation is still there today. He was also contracted by John Doyle to work on the roads.
