St. Patrick's, Cessnock built in 1893 the stone church at Nulkaba. There had been a wooden building built earlier in the same grounds.

St. Josephine nuns focused on country children, Sisters of Mercy focused on city children. Orphanage at Cessnock.

Frank Compton was the builder of the new school at Greta. It was postponed because of the '55 Flood in Maitland - the opening was done in April 1955 by Mons. Peters, the Vicar General. The school was organised by Fr Campbell.

Recalls building of Greta school.

Cost of building Greta Convent School it cost £4,992 including furniture. It worked out to £50 to put a roof over each pupil's head and £5 to put a desk under them.
Recollection of Greta Migrant Camp school - Frank Compton built this too.

The town of "Farnborough" was originally Bowen's land with the church fronting the main street. "A Country Letter" found in Freeman's Journal held in the St Mary's library holds a lot of fine details.

Cardinal Moran - was Murray's cousin. (Murray was secretary to the Bishop in Dublin) - Murray came to the Diocesan of Maitland and appointed Moran as Vicar General) - .

St. Patrick's, Lochinvar opened on Nov 27th 1866. Cardinal Moran wrote to every bishop "send me the history of your Diocese".

Bishop Dwyer collected the info - he was Inspector of schools before he became a Bishop. Moran produced The History of the Catholic Church in Australasia.

Brief history of Branxton Catholic Church - the first was a slab structure at Black Creek built by Dean Lynch before 1841 and replaced by a brick church until 1886 when the present church was erected.
The first nun in Cessnock was Sr. Magdalene.
The church school at Kurri was destroyed by fire on Nov 12 1928.
Replaced by a new building in 1929 possibly November. The schooling transferred to the Ambulance Hall.
