Resident of Keims Hill – George Harrison was his mother’s father (Paternal grandfather. He never saw his paternal grandfather.

His father’s sister married Davies and her husband also had the choirs at Cessnock and Kurri. Etty’s father was a miner. Etty’s father and the narrator were going to be the first miners to go “on the coal” when they sunk at Maitland Main. On the passenger train returning from the baths at Moree he was waving out to some kids crossing the line when an engine came along and bumped two carriages which cut his legs off at the ankles. He died. By the time he reached Hexham “he ponged too much” – Smythe was working for Fry Bros as manager. Mr Henry had two black horses with lace down the sides of the horses and they’d walk the coffin to the cemetery.

Arthur was the first milk carter beginning in 1898. Bernie McGraine followed.

He married George Slade’s sister. Aub’s family –“none under 60” – His father was Dave Johns and his mother was Lucy Harrison. Seven kids in the Johns’ family eldest sister Gwen - Mrs Frankin married Sam, then Aub, then 2 sisters, Leah married Mr Bradley and Mag married Cec Bowden, Ken married Miss Williams and Dave married Dulcie Fields and Valma married Phillips the jeweller in Hunter Street.

First skating rink – Les Hill ran it. The open air theatre where Woodhouse built his shop. Arthur Mayo operated it. “The girl Porters” used to play the piano. Aub suffers an asthma attack and is laid up for 6 weeks.

Reynards – and then further shop owners along the street including butchers and bootmakers, a picture show, Bill Hoggetts Fruit O’s, a furniture shop, Coaldrake’s Deli, George Barnes the pastry cook and baker A etc.
