Athel D'Ombrain was born at Casterton, Victoria in 1901. Mr D'Ombrain's early schooling was at Shore College, Sydney between 1913-18. Realising his interests were not academic, he studied agriculture at Hawkesbury College.
After graduating he worked at a number of properties throughout N.S.W. without a great deal of success. In 1929 he moved to Maitland to work as an optical dispenser at his brother's practice.
During his life, Mr D'Ombrain was a naturalist, optical mechanic and a photographer.
