Big Ocker Creswell and his hard working wife. Ethel Kirker. George Jeffrey - Tom Jeffrey – East End Bowling Club members.
The newsagent “Cloughie” tried to commit suicide with spirit of salts – Bob Connolly was later than Cloughie - Merv Gibson sold out to Mrs.Sharpe (shut the shop).
Merv Slade and Fred’s son worked together. Merv’s father Harold Slade. Aub Johns married Harold’s sister she was a Slade.

Laurie Clifton and Bill Monnix were early butchers. Jack Clap managed The Store.
The fish and chips store was their take away store – it folded up because it couldn’t compete with the pub next door.
They lived at Carey Bay by the Lake. Surviving during the Lock Out and the Depression. The Wharfies were supplying vegetables and fruit. They got good fish off "old Parker" in exchange for a ham. Rabbits were supplied by another group. His group supplied wood. They had a soup kitchen. The last big strike was around ’49.

During the last lockout Fred worked at Hebburn No 2. Helped Jim Wilkie Get a job. Jim had an undermanager’s ticket. Jimmy went from Elrington to Hebburn. Jim died of cancer.
Beau Barnes married a “poker machine fiend” – she just couldn’t leave them alone…

Entertainment in Kearsley – Fred did tap dancing in the hall where the picture show used to be. At Aberdare they got so drunk they forgot the routine. “We had a walloping time” entertaining competitively. Jim Wilkie wrote about it in the paper. Ethel talks about the Saturday night parties – everyone took a plate.
Young people burning the school down – vandalism punishment was 6 months community service - $75 payment. Car stealing. Somebody pinched the fuses from their neighbours’ house.

Busying themselves – gardening, painting the house, visiting friends. The Progress Association was active for the schools. Fred was trustee for the sporting organisations.
They played vigoro for Kearsley with the Bluebells team in 1930’s. Cec Morton was a champ, good at riding. Frank Morton was good at snooker and billiards.

The billiard room was run by that "fat, short, nuggetty bloke married one of the Wilkersons or Jacksons" it was always in the name of Winnie Strayker.
The Catholic Church took over the hall “because there was that much gambling”. Mrs Strayker sold the tables. They sold the churches. The Church bought one of those army camps and it fell into disrepair. Luvo cakes.

Music for the dances. There was a pianola – Fred played piano. Bobby Watson was the violinist, Melva Penn was the pianist, Fred was MC - he kept the dance going, Walter Howe was a violinist – he could make a violin talk”.

Generating power at the power station. They got power from Cockle Creek (Caledonia). They would test the gas in B Shaft every 2 hours. What to do if the fan stopped. It’s not an easy job restarting it. Jack Morrison, Ted Bichard.
