Wife was Dorrie Quayle.

Bob was born in Scotland arriving in Australia 1907 aged 18 months. The family went to West Wallsend for 12 months and then to Cessnock. His father, John worked at Aberdare Extended in 1908 laying roads underground. Frankie Anderson and Bill Thompson (Alec’s father) were work mates. The Quayles and the Benders lived nearby. Lived on the corner of Percy and Sheddon Street.
John Marshall son of Maurice Marshall, under manager of the pit, Kirk was the manager and Duncan McGeachie was Bob’s uncle and the superintendent.
McGeachie came from Scotland – was at Lithgow and West Wallsend. Superintendent at Toronto. He was at Killingworth.
The aviary that was used when the explosion happened at Killingworth.
Bob started at McCabes - W.T. Cratchley – The origins of Cratchley’s – First owned by Punch in Main Street, then Arthur W Bridge, then W.T. Cratchley, then James McCabe, Billy Hartcher bought from McCabe’s son James, Bessop’s Body Works.
The Greta Cooperative. (Unconnected to the Cessnock Cooperative).

Frank O’Brien (Reg O’Brien’s father) and Billy Dury – Les Hill’s father had horse teams and skating rinks. Jim McCabe worked for Hill.
The Doyles and the Carrolls. Trying to understand the relationship between the families. The McGraines. Michael Carroll. Jimmy Carroll.
Reg Buffier. One of the Buffier boys married one of Bernard McGraine’s daughters and owned the Sheddon’s estate.
The old boarding house on Maitland Road was owned by Grace Pentlum (?) – she was a Buffier. Miss Curtis and Miss Martin. The Bourkes – Cec Daly and Mick Anderson.
The Blanchs. Stroud, Raymond Terrace. The Blanchs married into the Goochs.
Bob always worked in the shop – never in the pit.
The Buffier estate was clear land when the pit first came – the rail came when the pit came – Arthur Biggers (?) told Bob that the rail was supposed to come where the West End Bridge is – to the middle of the town where the bank and Council Chambers were – they found coal was at Extended – Capper Gehrig did the digging for David. George Brown owned all the land. He didn’t want to sell so they went to Vincent St. In March 1904 the rail got there. Harry Fletcher. Harry Bailey married Mrs Jackson. Sheddon St. vineyard, apple orchard and sawmill. George Brown’s brother, John had an apple orchard.

Garney Tinsel, Bob Brown (Gallipoli veteran) son of John Brown – worked on the tunnel , Nelhams had a shop on Maitland Road – used to go around selling crockery – George Brown’s family who had a fruit market near where the Worker’s Club is now.
The Sheddons started South building a lot of the pit tops. When Bob was a boy there were no houses on Mt View Road. Buffiers, the Blanchs, Heslop had houses.
Early dentists – Herbie Daunt, Goodall (two brothers).

Cordial suppliers, ginger beer suppliers. Door to door delivery with a two horse team
Countis boarding house. Summers built the Australia Hotel, originally called The Falls Hotel. It was a wooden place and built behind the bigger place while the Australia Hotel was getting built to keep the license. Releathy the tailor bought the land off Bob’s uncle. He lived in Sheddon Street. They talk about the path of water through his place that created the swamp where the Australia Hotel was built. Curbed and guttered. Releathy lived behind the pub.
