Dulcie Farrell recounts her childhood in Sawyer’s Gully and differences between life then and life now. She discusses the mail run, going to dances and the hard work her mother put in running the household at a time with no refrigeration.

Dulcie married in 1923 and came to King St, Abermain
Ambrose Murray’s grandmother was Catherine Welch and Dulcie’s husband’s mother was Sarah Welch, they were sisters.

Mail carrier, Doyle’s, Turner, before him was Wal Jurd
Hilda Jurd, nee Clifton, it was her father driving for Joe Doyle
They would sometimes catch lifts into Maitland with the mail, she recalls her mother walking to Maitland from Bishop’s Bridge.
Going to dances, her brother got engaged to a girl Pesco and she wasn’t asked to come with them anymore.

Her grandfather and father worked on Maitland roadworks for the council, as far as Parson’s Bridge
Recollection of father's pay rise from 6 to 7 schillings a day.
Family dinners, tablecloths and manners.

Food preservation, had to get fresh food twice a week, butter cooler, c.1930, they had their own cows which their mother had to milk.
When water got low her mother took washing to the creek near Button's paddock, Bishop's Bridge. They had two big tanks and a well.
They discuss differences in medical care, pulling own teeth.
Mother cooking rabbit and the old camp oven where a leg fell off.
Father buys wood stove in Maitland for 2 pounds, ‘sooting’ the stove.
Her husband and sons worked at Neath pit, her father-in-law had pit timber contracts.
Laurie (Lawrence) Farrell (son) won bursary, St. Joseph's, buying clothes for college, had to have coupons during the war years to buy clothes, Laurie died of a stroke at 43, died 5 years after the stroke.
