1918 - Jack asks Bob Armstrong about early horse buses in the Coalfields area.
Alf Mitchell stabled horses which were used in horse coaches. Bob knew of a J.D. Armstrong who ran pit buses to Paxton and Stanford Main.
Father owned T-model Ford, seated 18-20 passengers
1924. There were early carrying/transport businesses run by Charlie Efford who had a horse and cart. Charley Luscombe had a run at Aberdare using a Reo truck. Ditton and Hill took over from him but it didn’t last.
Before Luscombe Tom Jurd and Efford were brother-in-laws and they had the mail and milk run. Cessnock Dairy Company. Efford brought the milk to the wine shop at Cessnock.
“Major Crane”, the 19 week mining strike came in at this time.

In the 1930’s Bill Jenkins and Stan Barksby (they were brother in laws) were in the bus business together.

Scott McGill and Bill Murphy were previous bus owners and Ted Lowe and Jimmy Lightfoot may have had a 6 team dray at Boolaroo. He carted from the railway. Mel Jurd came from Wollombi. He was in the Australia Hotel – involved with George Ryder.

Amos Fogg always had drivers. He ran to Central.

In the mid 1920’s Bob Armstrong was about 16 (1927) while the Lock Out was on, he took over the transport business from his dad while he was recovering from an operation.

Tom Treloar was the first BP agent with a small Morris truck made deliveries.

Ern Sternbeck had the Buick agency and the brains behind Sternbeck was Dempsey. Jack (saddler) and George (undertaker) Pring. Peter Sallas did a bit of taxi driving.
Joe Doyle had a horse and sulky. It was the earliest taxi service.

“The Drag” was the topless bus service which took punters to the races.

The Bubonic Plague – School was made into a quarantine centre. Mick’s sister, Marion Edwards, helped Bob’s mother at the centre. She had a tip in the races, a “lop eared donkey” called Aneurysm. It ran third!

Together they talk about three bakeries opposite Alec McMurray’s taxis : Jack Natriss’ – The Bakehouse, Rowan’s Bakehouse at Aberdare and Clary Watkins at Thatcher’s Bakery.
