Neighbours near old shingle place - Stan Evans, Mr. Newton (bank manager), Gayor’s, Turner’s Sawmill (son Jack), Wine merchants, Bridge’s Store, Mr. Punch, “Yorky” Ward –opposite Bridge’s, Dr. Bloomfield, Dr. Walker-Smith, Dr. Cecil, Macdonald’s Fish Shop, Conway’s Grocery Store, Newsagents, Northumberland Hotel

A yarn about pinching eggs – after pinching them he was escaping across a log bridge. He fell in and cut himself. He had to be stitched up and this was done without anaesthetic. He was one of the early patients at the hospital and he describes them as using “primitive surgery”.
The “Cessnock Eagle” office first opened where the Forestry office is now. The “Cessnock Express” was the second paper to open.
Eagle office burnt down
There was discussion about a bowler hatted gentleman called Harrison who opened the Express.

Bellbird dam burst – which flooded George Brown’s place.
Reference made to several events like the above. The old barber shop – behind Doyle’s place. The incinerator behind the saloon. The old fellow who was found dead in the creek with half his face eaten away by rats – When the policeman was told he is supposed to have complained “you could have told some other bugger!”

There’d be fights outside “The Northumberland” – Frank Suser, Fred Hawkes made a fortune out of newspapers and barbering. Hawkes eventually moved to Strathfield. Milty reckoned Hawkes never gave much away. During Milty’s apprenticeship to him, he put him on probation for 3 months without pay and Milty wasn’t allowed to shave or cut hair for three years. Hawke was called “Jewy” – a Jew.
