SummaryMick was born in 1911 in Weston. Father known as Blue (because of the blue moleskin pants) Named Edward John.

He worked at the East Greta Mine at Anvil Creek. He lived in Weston and travelled to East Greta pit. He paid 2/6 to belong to the Weston Fire Brigade at 18 and was with them for over 60 years, Captain for 20 years. His grandmother was a Hannan (Louise) from Maitland. His grandfather (a Scot) worked in the coal mines at Hebburn but due to an accident his leg was broken and he opened up a greengrocery business at Weston. (Weston known as Pagan Hill).

1903. Hebburn and Stanford Merthyr transition - 3 Tunnels - the Old and the New Tunnel and Sore Eye. Across from the Washery. Mick started work in May 1924. He worked for 23 years. Subsidences - South Maitland records the first coal haul from Weston coming from Sore Eye. First managers - the Bubonic Plague - Mick was at Hebburn (he finished work in 1971) Between 1963 - Hebburn closed their offices in Newcastle.

The Bubonic Plague - Captain Webb. Hubbard Park - early history of Hebburn. Original Frames from Hamilton in Scotland. Mother's side - called Falvey came from the Glebe in Newcastle - originally from Ireland - Brunwich (?) from Merewether. Father worked in "Jimmy Governor" country - tin mine area. East Greta country - Father's sisters - Aunt Milly married Les Holmes, a carpenter. Aunty Aggie married Arthur Garrett. Aunty Ethel married George Wilson. Aunty Louie married Jo Barker. Then there was Mick's father and his brothers Andrew, Roy and Alec.

Mick was the eldest, brother Merv married Eva. Brother (Cougan) Eddie and sister Dulcie married Les Fleet, brother Arthur, Alec and Dawn married Paul O'Connor. Mick was born and schooled in Weston. Also attended the convent at Abermain and Marist Brothers in Maitland. Most of the family worked in the mines. Wife was born in Coromal - Maiden name Storey. Wife's name Iris?

Became First Aid officer at Hebburn No 1. Then to New Vale 1 - Manager - Peter Tor Superintendent Mick Nielsen and Jim Johnson the top man. Finished in 1971. First Pagan soccer team - incident where two men were struck by lightning. Peter Copic and Slim Hatfield were killed. George Montgomery's father was the special constable at Hebburn who "always looked the part". Pith helmet, uniform and leggings and a good horse.

Bag town - "Tomtits" - football team. The Bag Town was adjacent to the dam, close to Sore Eye. Date Avenue named after "Banger" Date a constable - Father Cullen drove his horse and sulky over to his parishioners. Pagan Hill was named after this priest riding amongst these people shouting "you're a bunch of pagans!" (Irish accent and a long sulky whip flicking).

Abermain school - Joe Doyle - transported them from Nulkaba to Cessnock. The original school on the hill on the way to Hebburn No2 - the old concrete cricket pitch remains. The origins of Aber (confluence of the waters) main - Welsh. Capper Gehrig and Andy Gallagher appear in a photo - they were just starting out working with David Gallagher - the original blacksmith. Tommy Taylor and Bert McMahon (Mick's uncle) the first two who drove the horses who pulled the skips to load the coal at a little siding.
