Dances and musicians at the church hall – the best floor – The Moores from Branxton. People came from everywhere Lochinvar, Cessnock and Abermain. There were dances at Rothbury. They were held in the Hall and there were tennis courts behind. The Rothbury Progress Association.

Shopping was done in Maitland by horse and buggy each fortnight. It was a 2 hour trip each way with horse and buggy. There were no shops in Bishop’s Bridge. Jenny Lee had a shop (homemade lolly maker). They had the post office for a while) on the left coming from Maitland. Half a mile from the Majors Lane corner.

Jack asks about a brickyard. The Devil’s Elbow was the name for an underpass under the railway.

The floods meant they had to go around to Sawyers Gully to the Farley Bridge.

Talk about 5 fall ins at Ayrfield No. 1 and No. 2 – there had been one towards Glen Ayr. The Coal Board had to fill it in. Loose coal caught fire. Trains made a straight run into the pits at Ayrfield.

Ayrfield - Fire at the pit – right up the tunnel – like a bush fire – uncertain of the year.

The slab built church – unusual because the slabs went sideways.

Mollie started school at Sawyers Gully and finished up at Keinbah. The Millards. Jock Millard. Grant Millard owned the school.

Mrs Millard was the biggest woman and very tall. "They had to tie something on the back of the hearse to stop the wheels coming down the hill." "It was terrible steep".

Bush weddings – Mr Williams may have been the minister at Sawyers Gully. The Findlays. Using trees and branches "as the church" in bush weddings. Abermain Road. Jack Apthorpe. The Meares, the Hawkins and the Barnards. A double wedding. Miss Jenny Lee who made home-made lollies. She adopted a 2 year old boy. The Lee’s had the Sawyers Gully Post Office for a while.
