Luscombe was the minister – the Wollombi church, first church at Payne’s Crossing – you had to buy your own seat. Harry went to school at Payne’s Crossing – Stockyard Creek School.

The Roberts family was large. Bill Payne was the first man who built a house at Payne’s Crossing. His wife arrived with him, she wasn’t a local. Bob Payne was his son who eventually went to Maitland. Ned Roberts lived next door to Harry’s father in Stockyard Creek. Two members of the Roberts family went to Tamworth, Jack went to Maitland.
Slack, the school teacher took over from Farrell who opened the school. Slack was Ashley Slack’s father. He was good to Harry who walked 3 miles every morning. 63 kids at the school when he was there.

Hamlyn, Lyner, Bob Roberts married Harry’s sister Jane, Fletchers and Roberts, Mason, Tobey, Walton, Burgess, Johnsons ( first post master at Payne’s Crossing), Walker, Sylvester family of 6 boys and 2 girls. Jim Martin (whose family gave the name to Martinsville - they came across from the Watagans). The Walkers – Heath had one son and 4 daughters. Morris family was there. Coopers and Williams and Cody (Hilda Cody who worked at The Store married Ernie Vidler). Amos and Maggie and Jim Cody went to school with Harry.

Frank Williams was another fellow student. Maudie Lesley and her sister.
They had to go to Wollombi to shop. Hockey drove a truck with everything in it and it took a week to do the circuit from Chapman’s store in Wollombi. Harry made his own bread. Jimmy Andrews, Ernie Willis married Andrew’s sister. They may have taken the shop from Jimmy who married George Brown’s sister. Miss Andrews had the money.

Billy Bowen sold clothes out at Wollombi where the school is – Harry bought his suit of clothes from him for 30/-. It was made for Harry. He had the shoulder redone because Harry had a broken collarbone from breaking in horses.

Second wife surname was Hallam from Glen Innes. He was 17/18 when he first went to Newcastle. He followed a worn track with his bullock team. The nurse arrives.
