Recalls mother baking own yeast bread in a stone oven. Dampers were cooked in the camp oven.

Recalls making own butter. The only way they could keep the butter cool was in a spring in the gully nearby - this water was put in the churn.

Recollection of early socials/dances/sport. At Moores or McNamaras or Burgess'. The Roberts' weren't sporty people.

Billy Goodwin. There was always a violin or a piano or concertina. "Before you knew it you'd have half the furniture out the room and you'd be dancing till half past two in the morning". Reg had to go off and milk the cows and then got a chance to sleep.

Dick Burgess - he had a big kitchen and with a drop of wine, he'd play all night.

Ted Chick played the concertina with the Draytons and Stewarts.
Ted played for Harry Carr retired from the hospital.
Ambrose Mason from Millfield. The Brickmans.
Reg went on at school till he was 16 and went to work on the farm. The nearest school was Wollombi and then Broke. There was a one room school about 5 miles from Payne's Crossing and Broke at Owendale. A charabanc bus service started up delivering mail. Transport was horse and sulky. Tuesday was the Union day in Singleton. It was usually a weekly visit. His brothers all did bush work or farming. One brother had a bullock team carting
wool and wheat. Many of the bullockies carted wood out of the Wollombi area to Maitland. They'd bring a load back - largely casks of rum. There was a pub at Broke. They'd camp that evening under their wagons.
