Joe Doyle had a 5 horse drawn bus. It was a double decker with no roof on the top level.
There were stairs to get up to it. The judge from Maitland used to come out on race days

The racecourse was out at Allandale and there were monthly meetings.
The racecourse at Heddon Greta was near the motor track.

The hotel at Heddon Greta was built before the one at Kurri - the Empire.
Jim Wilson was probably the only hotel keeper "who made any dough out of it".

Monty's father used to fire underground and then haul out the coal. His father was a shiftman.

Monty always used to do carting - he never went underground.

Ditton and Hill had the first buses and only ran as far as Kurri. Christiansen ran from Weston to Maitland. "He had the best refreshment room in Marble Bar" People walked from everywhere ( Abermain and Greta) to Kurri.

Jordy Bill Hindmarsh was the coal carter came from the pits. "He was supposed to break records in the pits but he had a lot of blokes helping him."

Coal tickets were given in exchange for loads of coal. Monty had to shovel it out of the wagons into his dray.

Monty and his sister (who had been married to Council worker, Don Bailey) were the oldest residents in Weston at the time of the interview. His sister was younger than him.

The process of building roads in Monty's day using a horse and plough and scoops. Roads were graded with a shovel.

The ostler at the pit in Weston was Ted Morgan.

Sawmills at Heddon Greta and Mulbring and Cessnock.

Edwards had a vineyard out on the Sawyers Gully road.
Farrells had a wineshop and a baker. Hendersons were the baker at Weston. They went broke and Yeatmans took over but they went broke too.
Roderick was the first bread carter in Weston. They were also in the Denman pub. Connors took that bakery over. Jimmy Garrett built the Abermain picture show. Hipwell was in the pub and ran the picture show. The Jewels from Singleton also ran the pub and picture show.

Fights and the picture shows stopped when television arrived. The Olympia. Early Federation people included Bill Whiteman.
