The origin of the Payne family was French. The great grandfather came from France to England during the Revolution. Reg's grandfather was 29 when he left England for Australia.

Recalls taking produce to Maitland with two horses and a dray - making cheese. She'd come home with sovereigns in her pockets. She and one of her sons would walk to Maitland. She took the Bishops Bridge road through Cessnock.

They got 1/- a pound for butter. His father used to kill his pigs and make beautiful bacon.

Astley Slack's father was Harry Slack the school teacher. He thought 3d a pound was too much. He gave him 2d a pound.

Recalls sending produce to Union. Jack asks how long it would have taken Reg's grannie to walk from Payne's Crossing to Maitland. He thought it would be a week and that they'd have to camp a couple of times.

Bill Cooper and George Roberts took produce in a spring cart to Cessnock - Cooper used to walk all the way. They estimated that it would take 2 days to walk to Maitland and 2 coming back.

Recalls "Granny" Payne carrying money in her apron. This was in about 1850 - with a big flood in 1867. Recollection of flooding, Paynes Creek. There were floods in 1897 and in 1949

Hilda Cody (worked at The Store) married Ernie Vidler. She was the sister to George and Andy.

John Cody lives near Wollombi and he works at the Council. He is from Werong Creek. The "Convict Trail" had largely disappeared when he came along.

Jim Roberts with Bob took out contracts to build half a mile of the road. They used wheelbarrows and would work when there was nothing happening on the farm.
